Caotica web solutions

Caotica’s legal entity was established at the beginning of 2009, although the first contracts and projects started already in late 2008, which we consider the true birth of Caotica. It was a turbulent time, as a deep and serious economic crisis began, when everyone cut back sharply and wondered what would happen next.

Turbulent times, new opportunities

I remember 2008 very well. The economic crisis didn’t just hit Estonia, it spread across the entire world. Big companies that had been pouring their marketing budgets into TV and outdoor media suddenly saw the “champagne rivers” dry up, and nearly every sector was thrown into crisis.

That turbulent period also marked the birth of the Caotica brand name and the company itself. The word ‘caótica’ means ‘chaotic’ in Spanish. And that’s exactly what the years 2008–2010 really were — chaotic. Who remembers when even city streetlights were turned off to cut costs? The grand spending and the real estate boom collapsed with a loud crash.

Companies began shifting their heavily reduced marketing budgets into digital, into the internet. It was cheaper than expensive mainstream media. Websites and digital channels were updated. Advertising moved online, because it was far more affordable, and every cent spent could be measured. While there was crisis everywhere else, in digital and web development everyone was busy with work.

It was also the time when social media was still in its infancy. Facebook was just beginning to take hold in Estonia. Most websites were still coded by hand, modern CMS platforms weren’t readily available yet, WordPress was only starting its rise, the local Saurus CMS came with an extremely expensive annual license and was very clunky.

Flash animations, quirky snowflake effects, logos with Santa hats, blurry graphics, and wildly varying skill levels, that was the late 2000s. A bit like the “Wild West”, where anyone who started talking about digital marketing and web solutions instantly became known across Estonia, simply because there were so few players.

It was fascinating to watch how technology in web and digital evolved. In nearly twenty years, so much has changed. It’s even funny to think that every year we’ve kept up with web trends, seen it all, done it all. And the best part of this story is that several clients who started working with Caotica back then are still our clients today.

Experience matters

It once felt strange to proudly say “working since 2008”, as if the starting point wasn’t important. But it truly is. A passion for building web solutions — and for the online world in general — is what started this journey, and that same passion has kept it going strong ever since.

Experience matters. Seeing how technology has changed at a dizzying pace over the decades teaches a lot. Trends, client needs, and shifts in the economy have all been a diverse school. The more years added to our portfolio, the smarter web solutions we can deliver — with a bigger picture and sustainability in mind.

A smart web solution isn’t about just “building a homepage” as cheaply as possible. The approach is “creating an environment that serves the company’s goals and is sustainable”.

We work with small local businesses, individuals, as well as larger international companies. Some are one-time projects, while others have been ongoing partnerships for more than ten years.

Partnerships for decades

90% of Caotica’s clients have come through recommendations, from business leaders and people who have had firsthand experience working with Caotica. That kind of trust speaks for itself. Clients come through referrals and organic search, as Caotica has never once relied on paid advertising. Those who come, stay.

A telling fact is that most clients have reached out because their company’s website had become outdated, and the agency that built it just a few years earlier no longer exists.

This is the reality of Estonia’s web development landscape. There are hundreds of “providers,” and new ones appear overnight. Young, eager IT enthusiasts quickly set up a company, build a pile of “homepages,” then burn out and disappear.

But companies that last for decades, companies that truly dedicate themselves to this field over the long term, are rare. And those are exactly the kind of stable, reliable partners businesses are looking for. That’s why the recommendations keep coming.
