Can AI really build your company website? In minutes and cheaply?
The short answer is: “Yes, it can!”
The longer answer is: “No, it can’t. Not yet.”
I recently met an entrepreneur, Tiit: “AI can build your website in just a few minutes!”
And it wasn’t the first time. Other business owners have said the same: “Why is website development so expensive? AI does it instantly.”
Sound familiar? It does to me. Very familiar. Promises like these are everywhere right now, and as a business owner they sound tempting — fast, pretty, and cheap. Who wouldn’t want to save time and money? But here’s the truth: if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
I’ve seen these AI-made sites. At first glance they look nice: neat images, decent colors, clean design. Unbelievable that a robot did it. But look closer and something’s missing. No real content. No clear goal. To me, these sites look like those shiny, gift-wrapped empty boxes under a mall Christmas tree: beautiful on the outside, but when you peek inside… nothing.
Yes, AI can create a framework: set up structure, pick colors, place images, even generate some text. If all you need is a simple online business card with a company name and contact info, AI might be enough. And that’s fine — really. For some businesses that’s all they need. Why spend thousands when something simple will do?
But if your goal is a solid, thought-out website that actually delivers results, a pretty shell with a few lines of text isn’t going to cut it.
What exactly can AI do?
AI is great at mimicking what already exists. It copies ideas, creates visually pleasing patterns, and includes elements people expect: menus, contact forms, short blurbs. But AI doesn’t understand your company’s uniqueness, your customers, or your goals. It won’t ask: what is your website really for? To sell more products, collect leads, or educate readers?
An expert makes the difference
A good website needs an expert who helps your business stand out strategically. Web design isn’t just technical — it’s about purpose. A skilled designer and developer will help you shape content, goals, and user experience. They’ll ask the right questions, study competitors, and build a solution that truly works and makes you different.
And here lies the paradox.
We now have AI and more powerful tools than ever before, but websites have never been more expensive than they are today.
Why?
Because the importance of websites has skyrocketed. A site is no longer just a pretty business card — it’s a tool that supports your entire business strategy. People expect more: better UX, faster speed, SEO-friendly content, and conversion-focused design. All of that takes expertise and time — and yes, bigger budgets.
In conclusion
AI really can spin up a website for you in minutes and at low cost. But before you go down that tempting path, think about what you actually need: a nice-looking but empty shell, or a functioning website that drives business results.
AI isn’t an expert — not yet. The expert is you, together with the right people around you.
AI vs professional-built websites
| Aspect | AI-built website | Professional-built website |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Minutes to a few hours | 2–12 weeks, depending on project |
| Cost | Low (tens of € / month) | Higher upfront (thousands €), but long-term value |
| Content | Generic, machine-generated | Custom, strategic, aligned with brand & goals |
| Design | Standard templates, decent visuals | Unique, tailored, conversion-focused |
| Flexibility | Limited, struggles with complex needs | Scalable, integrates with tools & systems |
| Business impact | Online presence only | Supports growth, sales, and marketing strategy |
