Websites are more expensive than ever. Why?
Imagine walking into a car repair shop and saying: “I just want a simple car to get me from A to B. Nothing fancy.” But when they offer you a car without AC, radio, or anything beyond a steering wheel and brakes, you’d probably frown. “Isn’t there a more modern option?” you’d ask.
The truth is, we’ve all become so used to comfort features that “basic and simple” doesn’t really mean what it used to.
Now think about websites. We live in a world where even the most tech-averse person can drag and drop blocks to build a homepage. AI will spin up a “world’s best website” in minutes if you just ask. So why are website prices higher than ever?
I remember back in 2008, you could build a decent company website in a couple of weeks, and an invoice of €300 (yes, in kroons back then) felt like a serious investment. Today? A website quote can sometimes look closer to the price of a new car. And we’re still talking about a “homepage.”
Why are websites more expensive now?
The main reason is expectations. A modern website is no longer just a digital business card. It’s a layered system that needs to do many things at once — and do them well.
It has to perform flawlessly on mobile as well as desktop. It has to load fast enough to keep visitors from leaving in frustration. It has to be SEO-friendly so Google can actually find it. On top of that, it needs to deliver content that not only informs your clients but persuades them to take action.
So why doesn’t technology make websites cheaper? That’s the illusion. Sure, Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, or AI-powered builders can get you a basic site quickly and cheaply. But an effective business website is another story. AI can whip up a nice layout in minutes, but it doesn’t understand your business nuances, your market, or your customers the way an experienced web developer or designer does.
And the technology itself has become more complex. Modern websites are tied into CRM systems, marketing platforms, analytics tools, and e-commerce integrations. Every extra feature means more development time, more expertise — and higher cost.
It’s not just “building a website” anymore
Clients today expect a site that actively supports their business goals: boosting sales, generating leads, improving visibility, and powering marketing campaigns. Website development has become a strategic process where every detail matters.
That’s why websites are more expensive than ever. Not because technology can’t make things cheap, but because a good website — one that truly works for your business — has never been harder or more complex to create.
If you just want something simple and cheap, drag-and-drop builders or AI can get you there. And maybe that’s enough for you.
But if you want a website that helps your business grow, then you need to accept that quality always comes at a price. And today, that price is higher than it used to be.
